40th Anniversary Studio Ghibli
On 15 June 1985, Studio Ghibli, a small animation studio with enormous ambitions, opened its doors in Japan.
Studio Ghibli, founded by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, would change not only Japanese animation, but also global cinema. With lush hand-drawn art, emotionally complex characters, and deep philosophical undercurrents, Ghibli's films transcended the boundaries of conventional ‘children's cartoons’ and elevated animation to a medium worthy of serious cultural recognition.
Forty years later, the studio's track record is undeniable, with two Academy Awards, worldwide recognition and a body of work that has shaped the artistic language of anime for generations. That's why, in September, we are showing two documentaries about Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli, as well as seven films.
