4K restoration from 2025 of the classic Killer of Sheep by director Charles Burnett. A cinéma vérité-style narrative about Stan, a worker in a slaughterhouse, resident of the Watts neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Stan (Henry Gale Sanders) comes home dead tired from work but tries to stay upbeat, just like his wife (Kaycee More). The camera follows the cast – largely composed of Burnett's friends and acquaintances – in loosely connected episodes, which together form a 'slice of life'; friends pass by, the children play, neighbors strike up conversations.
Burnett submitted the 16mm film as a graduation project at the film school of UCLA, complete with a soundtrack featuring songs from top artists like Etta James, Earth Wind & Fire, Dinah Washington, and works by Gershwin and Rachmaninoff.
