In the last 34 days before she begins an eleven-year prison sentence, Elizabeth Holmes, the fraud-convicted founder of the infamous medical tech company Theranos, opens her doors to filmmakers Nathan Fielder.
Full access is the agreement. Do Holmes and her life partner Billy Evans want to show with this invitation that Holmes has nothing to hide and thus prove her innocence? Or are there other reasons?
The film crew begins the adventure with skepticism. What follows is an intriguing game between Fielder, Holmes, and Evans where the viewer, tossed back and forth in an emotional rollercoaster of twists and turns, constantly wonders: what am I looking at? In this equally bizarre and complex portrait of an inscrutable fraudster, nothing is as it seems. Fielder questions, seduces, pokes, challenges, and pulls out all the stops to gain control of the situation. Holmes and Evans push back and move along. Who is actually playing whom?
Awkward, funny, and spine-chillingly exciting, this film, worked on secretly for three years, explores the challenges and limitations in understanding and portraying a person.
