Inés goes on a journey of discovery through India in search of Ladyland, the utopian land of women.
During her stay in India in 1905, Spanish Inés stumbled upon a book titled Sultana's Dream. This book by Bengali feminist thinker Rokeya Hossain describes a utopia called Ladyland, where men must stay at home so that women can move and develop freely. The book provides a starting point for a magical-realist exploration of the role of women in the past and present.
Each part of this film by director Isabel Herguera is rendered in its own unique visual style: Inés' journey is in ink and watercolor; shadowy figures populate Hossain's story; and Ladyland consists of traditional Mehndi patterns. Visual must-see.
