Forget T-1000 from Terminator. In this sci-fi anime, robots are not the bad guy. Or are they?
The year is 2200 and private investigator Aline is tasked with finding a hacker - along with her partner Carlos Rivera, a robot backup of her boyfriend who died five years ago. Their investigation takes them from Earth to Mars via gunfights and robberies. With each development, they encounter a new layer of intrigue, corruption and expressions of the abrasive relationship between humanity and their android co-inhabitants.
This debut feature from Jérémie Périn holds its own proudly among the heavyweights of science fiction, drawing much inspiration from anime classics. Although Mars Express thus treads familiar territory, the film is bursting with surprises, unexpected twists and unforgettable quirks. Mars Express finished in the top 10 audience favorites during the IFFR in Groningen.
