The thirteen-year-old Nada lives with her aunt Gara in a small village in Montenegro. To the dismay of the residents, their grazing sheep must make way for a NATO training area.
The stubborn Gara leads the protests against this encroachment on the protected nature. She even appears on national television, where she makes a passionate plea for the preservation of the 'mother mountain'. Meanwhile, Nada leaves for school in the city; her future is likely elsewhere. But she returns regularly.
Alongside the struggle to preserve a beautiful, centuries-old landscape, the film also revolves around another, more personal battle. The women in Gara’s family have all experienced domestic violence.
Slowly, the film uncovers a family trauma that Nada must come to terms with. Fortunately, there is also the deep bond between the generations of women: as Nada grows into a young woman, they vow to protect her. Thus, the women fight on different levels against the oppression of violence, from the military, and their community.
