Films are more than just stories or entertainment; they make us think about the big questions of life. In our Film x Philosophy series, we explore themes such as humanity, technology, and existentialism through film.
Nights of Cabiria falls under Italian Neorealism, a film movement that provided a humanistic view of the fate of the Italian people after the horrors of World War II. In this edition of Philosophy x Film, we will examine this masterpiece through Sartre's lecture "Existentialism is a Humanism" (1945), reflecting on a philosophical movement that was also a response to the cultural shift caused by the war. The effects of that change are still felt today.
Jacob Boorsma (1997) has been teaching about his two passions—philosophy and film—for many years. He studied Film in Brussels, where he made many short films, and graduated from the University of Groningen with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. With an encyclopedic knowledge of film and specialized knowledge of philosophy, Jacob makes even the most complex concepts understandable in an accessible and engaging way.
