Following the conclusion of his comedic documentary series How To with John Wilson, Wilson needed to find a new platform for his humorous observations on everyday life.
A workshop titled "How to Write and Sell a Hallmark Movie" inspired him to apply what he had learned to a new project: a documentary about concrete. In the process, he discovers that concrete touches upon nearly every aspect of American society.
This is fortunate, as Wilson, as a filmmaker, prefers to delve into the person behind a given fact or detail. While filming America’s oldest concrete street, for instance, his focus shifts toward an entrepreneur who preserves the tattoos of deceased individuals. Throughout the process, he discusses the development of his project with the people he interviews.
Through Wilson’s camera, we see the world as he does; he also draws the viewer into his observations by frequently addressing them directly, a hallmark of his distinctive style. Ultimately, The History of Concrete serves as a witty portrait of New Yorkers trying to keep their heads above water in a city that, much like aging concrete, threatens to fall apart.
