Through archival footage, animations, and painfully candid conversations, Louis HotHotHot explores how modern Chinese history and misogyny continue to shape the lives of these women.
In doing so, he transforms an intimate family portrait into a compelling narrative about the status of women and the evolving family culture in China.
In his directorial debut, Four Journeys (the opening film of IDFA 2021), Louis HotHotHot explored the harrowing consequences of China’s one-child policy. Once again, he fearlessly turns his camera toward his own family, this time prompted by a sorrowful event: the passing of his father. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the filmmaker is unable to reach China in time to say goodbye. Upon reuniting with his mother and sister, Louis HotHotHot documents their arduous struggle to redefine their lives. His mother wishes to remain in his father’s ancestral village to tend to his spirit, but who will look after her? Meanwhile, in the big city, his sister grapples with the challenges of being a single woman.
