On the plains of Morocco, young boys are initiated into Tbourida, an ancient equestrian art form in which teams, following established patterns and rituals, gallop forward as a unified front and fire gunpowder into the air.
Centering on two brothers who aspire from a young age to become accomplished horsemen, Bardi unfolds as a portrait of several distinct characters. Over the course of several years, the film explores the care and brotherhood that underpin this spectacle.
Strength and precision go hand in hand with tenderness, humor, and vulnerability. Bodies, horses, dust, and song grow together into a performance in which everyday identities are shed: the farmer becomes a general, the young man a prince, the laborer a hero. Play and fantasy are also reflected in the filmmaker’s approach to the riders, drawing inspiration from how they perceive and present themselves. In this second installment of her trilogy, following House in the Fields, which focused on the coming-of-age of Amazigh girls, Hadid constructs an epic out of ordinary lives. Within this world, the horses, with their steady gazes and thundering hooves, seem to tell a story of their own.
