Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is considered one of the most influential horror films of all time and is often regarded as the benchmark of modern horror and slasher genre. With minimal resources, Hooper created a raw, documentary-like atmosphere that inspired generations of filmmakers.

“Who will survive and what will be left of them?" A group of young people travels through rural Texas in a van to visit the grave of a family member after reports of grave desecration. Along the way, they pick up a strange hitchhiker, who gets thrown out of the van when he cuts himself in his hand.

When they arrive at the remote family house, they discover that the nearby farmhouse is inhabited by a family of cannibalistic murderers, including the infamous psycho with the chainsaw, Leatherface.

One by one, the friends fall prey to the murderers, until only Sally is left. Her desperate flight is one of the most famous and iconic finales in horror film history.

Thursday, November 5, 21:05 with introduction by Jan Doense

Jan Doense—artistic director of Film by the Sea and a horror aficionado—brought The Texas Chain Saw Massacre to the Netherlands for a re-release. He is eager to explain why this is the greatest horror film of all time and why Tobe Hooper is the Orson Welles of horror directors. Doense says: "I was 16 when I first saw it, and it has only improved with the passing years. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is abrasive, unsettling, and unpredictable; it pushes the viewer further out of their comfort zone than they might like. In short, it does everything a good horror film should. The first cut is—and remains—the deepest."
