Intense French drama based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux, about a defining moment in her life: her first, far from tender, sexual experience during a summer camp.
As a girl from a Catholic family in rural France, Annie wants to break free from her familiar surroundings. She takes a job as a counselor at a summer camp, determined to have new experiences and push her limits. But reality turns out differently.
The slightly older, attractive head counselor chooses Annie as his next conquest and manages to seduce her into going to bed with him. It is Annie's first sexual experience, but the deflowering is anything but tender. The experience haunts her for decades, and the shame and humiliation leave deep scars in her identity.
By returning to her past, Annie tries to better understand the seventeen-year-old girl she once was and to discover how memories can permanently nest in a body.
