Home is about belonging somewhere, sacrifice, and the generations shaped by displacement.

Maja is six years old when almost her entire family decides to move from Yugoslavia to Denmark. Her two brothers stay behind for the time being, waiting for the right moment to follow the rest of the family to the promised land. But Denmark proves to be anything but the welcoming refuge they had imagined. They must learn a new language, adapt to different customs, and get to know an unfamiliar environment. Do they even want to stay here?

Maja grows up in Denmark and builds a life and career as an artist. Yet she cannot shake off everything her parents left behind.

Actress and filmmaker Marijana Janković was the same age as Maja when her family traded Ivangrad (now Berane) for Northern Europe – and that is just the most superficial similarity between Maja and Marijana. As the two main characters, Dejan Čukić from Ivangrad and Zlatko Burić from Osijek, undoubtedly know, the stories of Maja and Marijana each have their own particularities, but the main lines remain the same, regardless of generation or country of origin.

Home is more than an autobiographical narrative; it is a masterful story about emigration.
