In America, librarians are under pressure due to political polarization, as an unprecedented wave of book bans is underway. As the crisis escalates, they join forces as defenders on the front lines of democracy.
The documentary The Librarians, which premiered at Sundance, brings (former) library staff and supporters out of the shadows and before the camera in their united resistance against book banning.
In 2021, Texas Congressman Matt Krause shared a list of 850 books that he claimed had a harmful influence on young readers. The list seemed particularly aimed at queer themes and racial issues. Shortly thereafter, the governor of Texas demanded the immediate removal of the list of books from school libraries. The Librarians shows how librarians and those involved became targets of conservative America in a witch hunt that evokes disturbing parallels.
Through archival footage and new testimonies, filmmaker Kim A. Snyder (Death by Numbers) reveals how censorship is part of a large-scale political action to take over school boards.
