When filmmaker Déni inherits a piece of land in Georgia, he embarks on a quest for his roots, family, and the meaning of home. Could he start a new life here? Winner of Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival.
Déni travels to Georgia to see the place with his own eyes. Many Chechens live in this area, including family members of his mother, who once fled the war just like her. The tight-knit community that warmly embraces him shows him what his home could look like in that place. At the same time, the question that everyone wants to ask him lingers: when is Déni finally going to get married?
With stunning images and a subtle narrative style, we follow his search for his roots, his family, and himself, where the silences in conversations sometimes tell more than what is said. Pitsaev impressively and intelligently weaves universal themes such as suffocating gender roles, the indelible scars of war, and the endless search for where you truly belong.
A deeply moving and personal masterpiece. Rightfully awarded the prestigious prize for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival 2025.
