First part of an epic diptych about the wonderful rise of resistance leader (and later president) Charles de Gaulle in WWII. Director Baudry (The Wolf’s Call) presents his hero as a Don Quixote-like fighter.

June 1940. France surrenders to the German army and signs the armistice. Amid the chaos, one man refuses to give in to the situation: General Charles de Gaulle. As a newly minted enemy of the state, he flees - without military support or hope - to London to pick up the pieces of his fallen homeland.

De Gaulle has one unwavering belief: a new free France and a Europe that does not lay down its arms against Nazi Germany.

The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2026.
