Thanks to his characteristic disturbing humor and underlying tension, Lanthimos surprised everyone with this crushing revenge thriller during its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Dr Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) is a renowned surgeon who forms a perfect family with his perfect ophthalmologist wife Anna (Nicole Kidman) and their two exemplary children. Until Martin (Barry Keoghan), a fatherless teenager who Steven has taken under his wing, comes knocking at the gates of their idyllic existence. Martin pushes deeper into the family and when he confronts Steven with a past event, the dark nature of his goal becomes clear.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer is not structured as a loose collection of absurdist moments, as in previous work by Lanthimos, but has the tight structure of a revenge thriller with many references to Greek mythology.
