During his absence, circumstances force Geneviève to make a momentous choice. When Guy returns, it turns out that time has irrevocably taken its toll.

Catherine Deneuve achieved international breakthrough with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964. It also received five Oscar nominations, including for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Music.
