Young Geneviève helps her mother in an umbrella shop in Cherbourg and is madly in love with car mechanic Guy. Their future seems secure, until Guy is called up for military service in Algeria. During his absence, circumstances force Geneviève to make a momentous choice. When Guy returns, it turns out that time has irrevocably taken its toll.

Catherine Deneuve achieved international breakthrough with her leading role, and the film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1964.
