The Illusionist (2010) by Sylvain Chomet is a subtle and moving animated film about change and impermanence.
At the end of the 1950s, Parisian variety shows are being pushed aside by the rise of rock ānā roll. A struggling illusionist travels to the United Kingdom in search of new success, only to face the same challenges. In a Scottish bar, he meets Alice, an encounter that will change both of their lives forever.
With a melancholic tone, moments of gentle humor, and classic animation, Chomet crafts a film that is poetic, tender, and deeply affecting. The Illusionist was nominated for an Academy Award (Best Animated Feature, 2010) and a Golden Globe (Best Animated Feature, 2011).
