Mamoru Hosoda's new hit following the success of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and the first animated Japanese feature to participate in the prestigious Locarno Festival.
The virtual city of Oz offers everyone access to the internet at any time, for information, to pay bills, or to play online games. In his spare time, Japanese high school student Kenji works as a maintenance computer programmer for Oz. When Natsuki, the girl he is secretly in love with, invites him to go to Nagano for a family party for a few days, he immediately returns. The evening after the banquet, Kenji receives a strange email on his mobile phone containing numbers and the message: Decode me! As a lover of mathematics, he accepts the challenge and solves the puzzle. The next morning, he discovers that his avatar is being sought by the Powerful.
It is also a story for our time, in which we have adopted new perspectives on our online lives and social media.
