Monsters and queer desires on the wild coast of a remote island.
1862, Faroe Islands. Young fisherman Baldur lives with his mother in a small, isolated community on the wild coast. When the charismatic Danish whaler Helge comes to stay, tempers flare... and then a tragic accident brings a dark myth to life.
No Rest for the Wicked is a stunning gothic folk horror in the vein of Robert Eggers, based on a 19th-century short story by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, an early advocate for gay rights. The film is set in an isolated fishing community where strangers are mistrusted, superstition reigns, and the unforgiving landscape poses a constant threat. Through the beautiful imagery, you'll feel like you're in a 19th-century Faroe Islands, in a kind of Viking fairy tale. Danish actor Pilou Asbæk (Borgen) plays the seductive stranger, and newcomer Egor Venned (who truly comes from the islands) impresses as the young man whose repressed queer desires are about to explode.
