Ghost in the Cell

One of the roughest prisons in Indonesia, with a tyrannical director at the helm, is shaken by a series of gruesome murders. The prisoners must put their rivalries aside to work together and defeat a vengeful spirit. An extremely entertaining, socially conscious action horror comedy.

The Indonesian genre master Joko Anwar deviates in his twelfth feature film from his usual dark ghost stories. In the brightly lit prison of Ghost in the Cell , you see all the horrors in full regalia. Anwar alternates bloody scenes with chaotic slapstick, spontaneous dance-offs, dynamic fights, and sudden prayers. The tone is disarming, and much lighter than we are used to from him. With his signature visual flair and razor-sharp pen, Anwar portrays the prison as a microcosm of society, where corruption and class differences run rampant. A political message wrapped in a highly entertaining genre mix.
