The film follows Birahima, a street boy of about ten who sets out to find his aunt in Liberia after the death of his mother. Together with the cunning Yacouba, he travels across several West African countries, where he becomes caught up in violent conflicts and is eventually drawn into life as a child soldier.

With a direct narrative style and restrained yet striking animation, the film presents a harsh portrait of war and survival through the eyes of a child.
