Allah n’est pas obligé brings the raw and confronting story of a child soldier to life in a powerful animated film.
The film follows Birahima, a street boy of about ten who sets out to find his aunt in Liberia after the death of his mother. Together with the cunning Yacouba, he travels across several West African countries, where he becomes caught up in violent conflicts and is eventually drawn into life as a child soldier.
With a direct narrative style and restrained yet striking animation, the film presents a harsh portrait of war and survival through the eyes of a child. Allah n’est pas obligé is a gripping adaptation of Ahmadou Kourouma’s award-winning novel, making the human cost of violence and chaos painfully tangible.
During Framed, you will see the short film Geometries of Time - The Cockroach prior to Allah N'est Pas Obligé. A man comes home at night and steps on a cockroach: it is the beginning of a long agony that influences the surrounding world.
