European Researchers' Night
Vibrant science festival full of music, dance, shows and science battles!
Researchers are looking for solutions to the great challenges of our time. Every day, they are at their labs, digging in the ground, diving into the oceans or analysing texts to move our society forward. To celebrate and question the researchers and the solutions they find, the European Researchers' Night is organised annually all over Europe. In the Netherlands, Groningen is the place to be!
Together with Forum Groningen and other partners, the four RUG Schools for Science and Society* organise the European Researchers' Night. A dazzling science festival with over 50 programme elements. Stadjers, Ommelanders, students, non-students, researchers or non-researchers: all curious people are welcome! The theme of 2024 is Living in a Smart World. Will you be there?
Tickets include two welcome drinks.
The European Researchers' Night / Europese Nacht van de Onderzoekers (ERN) is an annual festival on the last Friday of September in several European cities, with the aim of bringing science to a wide audience. European Researchers' Night is co-funded by the European Commission, under the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme, grant agreement No.101162172.
*With the four Schools for Science and Society, the University of Groningen is committed to four crucial social issues: more healthy years (Aletta Jacobs School), digital society, technology and Artificial Intelligence (Jantina Tammes School), sustainable society (Rudolf Agricola School) and energy and climate (Wubbo Ockels School). Together with the public, educational institutions, governments and industry, these issues are addressed and helps the world moves forward.
Agenda
There are no new dates planned (yet) for European Researchers' Night.
Programme Highlights
A night with Lucas de Man and guests
Lucas de Man is a Flemish artist who wants to transform public spaces into places of wonder and amazement in a playful manner. Come to his talk shows at the Rabo Studio and let him invite you to see the world with fresh eyes, as he interviews guests about interesting topics such as smart cities, textile circulation, and the effects of social media on mental health.
BEAT Plastic Waste
In the apocalyptic world of BEAT Plastic Waste, percussionists create music with instruments made from actual plastic trash. Join us for a surreal performance turning garbage into beats of hope and transformation!
What do we want AI (not) to do?
Join us for the workshop What do we want AI (not) to do? door Dagmar Heeg on the boundaries of artificial intelligence. Let's explore the ethical limits and define what roles we don't want AI to take on. Share your opinion and be part of shaping our future with technology!
The workshop is available in both English & Dutch.
What does your ideal world look like?
Can you imagine your ideal world? Jan Kamensky can! He created short animated films of the transformation of car-dominated streets into human-friendly places. Visit his workshop and create a visual utopia of the street where you live.
Can you save a life with a comic? Find out!
Can comic books teach you how to save a life? We want to test this in a small experiment - with your help! Comics are seen as a powerful way to share information. But how effective are they for teaching first aid in an emergency? To save a life, you need to know the correct steps to follow. Can comics help with this too? Join and discover!

The reading brain: science behind dyslexia and learning
Discover the science behind reading skills and dyslexia! Participate in interactive tests and experiments that let you experience the importance of language knowledge, attention, and perception. Assist researchers in developing a new dyslexia screening tool for young adults and find out how science influences our daily thinking and learning.

Human Forever: the film
24-year-old activist Teun Toebes is on a mission to improve the lives of people with dementia. After living in a nursing home, he embarks on a global journey across four continents and 11 countries, exploring how dementia is managed worldwide. Alongside filmmaker Jonathan de Jong, Teun seeks solutions to make the future more inclusive. With dementia cases set to double in 20 years, this quest is crucial.
What is heritage?
What is cultural heritage, and who or what defines it? In this workshop, you can explore these questions by engaging with images from museum collections, everyday objects, and the environment. You can decide what a museum 1000 years from now should display, archive, or ignore by categorizing images on whiteboards. The whiteboards will display the evolving decisions of everyone participating.

Discover how to sleep better
Life is spent about 30% sleeping, but what do you actually know about sleep? How are light and your biological clock related? What factors influence whether you sleep better or worse? What can you do about it?
By: Rieks Hoekman and Michelle Luxwolda, Chrono@Work and Sleep in Sync.
Eierbal? No, Eiwitbal!
Imagine sustainable and healthy food from Groningen. The Fascinating program focuses on circular crops that provide proteins as nutritious as or even better than meat. An example is the 'eiwitbal', made from circular potatoes, pumpkin seeds, and field beans, with a fiber-rich coating that feeds our gut bacteria. Curious about how this tastes and what it can mean for you? Come by and explore the future of food!

Poetry by Myron Hamming
Myron Hamming, former City Poet of Groningen, connects current themes in the city and surrounding areas of Groningen in a unique way. As a true wordsmith he writes inspiring stories that truly make a difference. Let yourself be inspired by his poetry in the Rabo Studio show Transitioning together.

And much more!
There is much more to discover during the European Researchers' Night! With more than 40 activities in Dutch and English, it is the place for everyone who wants to know more about science: researcher, non-researcher, student, local, local, young or old. In short, the science festival for all curious people!
