“People with memories write the best,” says Donya’s boss, owner of a quaint California family business that makes fortune cookies. Still, Afghan Donya doesn’t want to think too much about the past as she puts one happy message after another in the cookies. At night, she lies awake, dreaming of a different life, with new memories, but she is drowning in guilt for those left behind. In an attempt to tempt fate, she sends a message out into the world, in search of her own happiness.

Fremont is a modest but sharp story about human connection in enchanting black and white with lots of warmth and dry humor. With touching roles for Golden Globe winner Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, The Iron Claw) and newcomer Anaita Wali Zada.
