Anyone who doesn’t know any better might think it’s a holiday camp. People are chopping wood and searching for coconuts. Two girls are singing a Taylor Swift song. But this is no holiday; it is a training camp for the People’s Defence Force in Myanmar.
On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military overthrew the democratically elected government in a coup d’état. When citizens protested, the military responded with bullets. A Canadian film crew embedded themselves with a resistance training camp, deep in the jungle. They filmed the young volunteers from the moment they arrived at the camp until their departure for the front lines 45 days later.
As best they can, these Gen Z gamers—some sporting Guns N’ Roses T-shirts—are being prepared for an unequal struggle. The regime possesses drones and combat aircraft, while the rebels craft their own explosives in a wok. Yet, these young people possess an abundance of motivation to fight for their freedom. A moving portrait of a brave, defiant generation.
