The curious and lively Totto-chan does not fit into Tokyo's strict education system in the '40s and is expelled from school.

Fortunately, she finds a new place at Tomoe Gakuen, where founder Sosaku Kobayashi offers his students freedom and creativity. But outside the playful world of Tomoe, war is encroaching further and further, and the world is becoming less and less colourful for the children. This story shows how innocent children grow up amid the stark reality of World War II. Yet it is an invitation to see the world through the cheerful eyes of Totto-chan.
