Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley will melt your heart in this poetic romance film that tells the story behind Shakespeare's Hamlet. From Chloé Zhao, director of Nomadland.
In 16th-century England, the plague is spreading. Will and his wife Agnes live a happy life with their three children. Until the plague strikes and their son Hamnet dies. Their all-encompassing grief finds its way into art. When Will leaves to work in the London theater world, one of his greatest works is born: Hamlet.
The film is based on the equally popular book of the same name by Northern Irish writer Maggie O'Farrell. Golden Lion winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland) directs. And instead of a classic Shakespeare biopic, Zhao shifts the focus from Shakespeare to the people around him: Agnes and her son Hamnet.
Hamnet won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival and has since been considered an Oscar favorite.
