Gael García Bernal is Magellan, the Portuguese explorer who landed in the Malaysian archipelago and subjugated the population while plundering, in this decolonizing portrait by Filipino master Lav Diaz.
For Magellan, Lav Diaz (Norte, the End of History; The Woman Who Left) contracted for the first time a well-known actor for the lead role, Gael García Bernal (Neruda, The Motorcycle Diaries, Y tu mamá tambíen). Diaz allows him to portray both the human and inhuman sides of Magellan, thus crumbling the myth of the stern but just colonizer, which is still revered in Spain. The stunning cinematography is by Arthur Tort, the regular cameraman of Albert Serra.
