When they unexpectedly inherit an abandoned house together in rural Normandy, a group of cousins discover that they share a special family history. In 1895, their ancestor Adèle, 21, went in search of her mother in avant-garde Paris.

At the time, the city was at the heart of a new art world with the rise of photography and the breakthrough of Impressionist painting. As Descendants follows Adèle's trail, they discover that her story is intertwined with that vibrant art world and even intersects with that of Claude Monet.
