Director Paolo Sorrentino (La grande bellezza, Youth) is back with his new, breathtaking film La Grazia. Toni Servillo plays an Italian President who must make a few important decisions during his final term while also coming to terms with the loss of his wife.
President Mariano De Santis's (Toni Servillo) term of office is drawing to a close. In the echoing halls of the presidential palace, he leads a solitary existence, mourning the loss of his wife. Before returning to ordinary life, De Santis must decide on two major issues that still lie ahead: pardon requests from controversial prisoners and a euthanasia law. His moral objections clash with human desires.
What will his legacy be to his beloved Italy? Sorrentino manages to capture his story in beautiful imagery and does not hesitate to surrender to the music from time to time. Just like his protagonist. La Grazia was the opening film at the Venice Film Festival, where Toni Servillo accepted the Best Actor award. 'Sorrentino has made some beauties in his career.
