President Mariano De Santis's (Toni Servillo) term of office is drawing to a close. In the echoing halls of the presidential palace, he leads a solitary existence, mourning the loss of his wife. Before returning to ordinary life, De Santis must decide on two major issues that still lie ahead: pardon requests from controversial prisoners and a euthanasia law. His moral objections clash with human desires.
What will his legacy be to his beloved Italy? Sorrentino manages to capture his story in beautiful imagery and does not hesitate to surrender to the music from time to time.
