Director Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge) transported the well-known romantic tragedy to the twentieth century. In Verona Beach, Shakespearean prose is still used, but swords and daggers have been replaced by pistols and the noble executioner is now a car. The prologue makes it clear that Romeo (DiCaprio) and Juliet (Danes) will not make it to the end, and then the trouble begins. Slow, fast and stop motion lead the viewer through violence, passion, revenge, forgiveness, (despair) hope, love and death. DiCaprio received a Silver Bear in Berlin for his performance.
