A personal and vibrant animated film about love, family, and self-discovery, where reality and fiction merge in creative ways.
In Bouchra by Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki, we follow a 35-year-old queer Moroccan coyote living in New York City as a filmmaker. While working on a semi-autobiographical film about her life, she maintains contact with her mother in Casablanca through phone calls. In these conversations—based on Bennani’s real recordings—she explores her identity, relationships, and family bonds.
The film combines 3D animation with live-action backgrounds, blurring the line between reality and fiction. Critics praised Bouchra for its cultural and LGBTQ+ themes, psychological depth, and playful weaving of documentary and fiction; some even compared its world of anthropomorphic animals to Zootopia.
