In Blue Heron, the feature film debut of Canadian-Hungarian filmmaker Sophy Romvari, memory and imagination intertwine in a personal and layered portrait of family and growing up.
Clear skies, endless nature, and carefree days at the beach set the scene for the childhood of Sasha (Eylul Guven). She plays with her brothers, cautiously makes friends, and explores the freedom of her new home. But beneath the surface, an invisible threat is palpable. Sasha’s older brother Jeremy (Edik Beddoes) struggles with himself, and his increasingly difficult, unpredictable behavior puts the family under pressure.
The film, partly based on director Romvari’s own childhood, follows Sasha not only as a child but also as an adult trying to reconstruct her youth through photographs and home videos. With this kaleidoscopic narrative structure, Blue Heron breaks the conventions of the traditional coming-of-age story, creating an intimate search for memory, loss, and understanding within a family.
