Trump vs. Harris: The biggest political show on earth!

On November 5, Americans will choose their new president. Will Donald Trump, despite the various lawsuits against him, return to the White House? Or will Kamala Harris become America's first female president? The biggest political show on earth is likely to become a neck and neck race. More than ever, the choice between a republican or a democrat will determine the course of the country. Consider, for example, the rights of women and minorities and America’s position in the world.

Whatever the results may be, Forum Groningen has got you covered with our traditional Election Night party. We'll provide an interactive, fun and interesting program into the early hours, to ensure you'll not only stay up to date and understand the elections thoroughly, but that you also have a good time. We'll provide talks and lectures on important societal issues at play in US society and inform you about American culture and politics. Additionally, we will host a pub quiz, there will be an American Fair together with Hilde Vos and band, and Democrats Abroad, you can test your time on the mechanical bull and show off your cheerleading skills. As the night progresses and the first results come in, we will keep everyone awake with fitness, games, donuts, coffee and music.

A History of Madness
Hans Klis, former U.S. correspondent (for outlets including NRC Media, BNNVARA, WNL, and HP/DeTijd), follows the bizarre developments in U.S. elections over the past two decades, from the unexpected rise of Barack Obama in 2008 to Donald Trump’s election in 2016 and the pandemic in 2020. In his book Help, the President Has Gone Mad, Klis examines the mental health of American presidents and shows that U.S. politics has always been "crazier" than we might think.

Abortion Rights at Risk
The outcome of the U.S. presidential election has major implications for the future of abortion rights in the United States. While Kamala Harris promises to protect and improve existing rights, Donald Trump threatens to restrict access. Dr. Rebecca Gomperts is the founder of Aid Access, a telemedicine service (remote healthcare using ICT) that provides women in countries where safe abortions are inaccessible with information and access to abortion pills. During Election Night USA, Gomperts will delve deeper into her work and how telemedicine abortion services have developed, both before and after the repeal of the constitutional right to abortion in 2022.

Pop Stars and Politics
Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift has voiced her support for presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Instagram. With 284 million followers, this could have a serious impact on the outcome. Pop journalist (Volkskrant) and author Menno Pot will explore the fascinating world of pop music and U.S. politics during Election Night USA, with special attention to the influence of superstars like Taylor Swift. Does pop music have a greater impact on election results than ever before?

Come meet Americans living in the Netherlands! Join Democrats Abroad at the American fair where you can take selfies with Kamala Harris, meet Americans living in the Netherlands, learn about the electoral college, guess the electoral 2024 election results and test your knowledge about USA trivia to win exciting prizes!
