Philosophical issues and everyday questions during the Groningen Night of Philosophy.

This edition focuses on the theme of Philosophy Month: Know Ourselves. Who are we, how do we connect with each other, and what does "we" mean in an ever-changing world? Listen to local and international speakers, discover new perspectives, and share your own thoughts.

English program:

  • International guests include the American philosophers Patricia and Philip Kitcher of Columbia University. Patricia Kitcher is known for her work on Kant, ethics, and the philosophy of mind, while Philip Kitcher focuses on the theory of science, bioethics, and rationality.
  • For some, religion is an occasional duty, for others a daily pursuit. What if the people you love most fiercely condemn your way of life? Political philosopher Élise Rouméas explores what it means to be born into a strict religious community and then lose your faith.
  • Filipa Melo Lopes, lecturer in Social and Political Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh, is researching the phenomenon of "feminist witchcraft." This movement argues that witchcraft was historically used to suppress female power and advocates for its reclamation. But is this truly a liberating idea, or merely a repackaging of old sexist stereotypes?
  • In "Philosopher about a Philosopher" philosophers from the University of Groningen take you on a journey through a thinker who fascinates them. A great inspiration, a favorite, or perhaps a philosopher to engage in passionate debate with. Including:
    • Maaike Korpershoek received her doctorate for her work on the work of mathematician and physicist Émilie du Châtelet (1706-1749). She was a key figure in spreading Newton's ideas in France.
    • For decades, Michel Foucault's (1926–1984) philosophy influenced left-wing political thought, from feminism to postcolonial studies.
    • Federico Minzoni invites us to critically examine Foucault's idea of "care of the self."

During the Night of Philosophy, you don't just have to think; you can also act! Talk to a philosopher during Ask a Philosopher or participate in a philosophical pub quiz. Finally, Night Philosopher Dimitri Goossens will close the evening, so you can go into the night well-prepared.
