Howard (16) and Juliette (14) are the last two teens still living on Isle de Jean Charles, a magical piece of land surrounded by water in the U.S. State of Louisiana. Disconnected from the outside world and immersed in nature, they experienced true freedom growing up. They belong here, together with the other members of their indigenous community who have lived here for generations.
But the only home they know is vanishing before their eyes. Oil and gas companies have carved navigation canals through their island, allowing for salt water to get in and poison the trees. Without trees, the island is left exposed to increasingly violent storms. When a hurricane destroys nearly every home, most residents flee.
Howard, Juliette, and their uncle, who refused to abandon the island, are now about to become the first U.S. climate refugees. They are offered a relocation and a new house. But a cheaply constructed new build in a sterile new town can never be a home. Or can it? Lowland Kids is a personal story that puts a human face on an urgent global issue, one that will be increasingly common for future generations.
