Oscar-winning masterpiece by Ingmar Bergman, who elevates the theme of revenge to something existential by portraying violence not as satisfying but as morally destructive.

One of Ingmar Bergman's best films is a gripping story about faith, revenge, and cruelty in medieval Sweden. With austere simplicity, the director tells the story of the rape and murder of the young virgin Karin, and of her father Töre, who ruthlessly seeks revenge on the three perpetrators. The austere imagery and medieval setting make the act of revenge inescapable and confronting, while the religious symbolism deepens the question of guilt and forgiveness. Because the climax offers no catharsis but rather spiritual emptiness and ambiguity, the film undermines the conventions of the revenge genre.

Starring Max von Sydow and filmed by the brilliant Sven Nykvist, the film is both beautiful and merciless in its portrayal of a world balancing between paganism and Christianity. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Picture.
