Together 99

In Together 99, Lukas Moodysson reunites the cast of Together (IFFR 2001) to take stock twenty-four years after the Tillsammans commune. It is 1999 and Klasse and Göran are the only two remaining members of the group. To temper their apathy, Klasse secretly invites former members of the commune for Göran's birthday party. As the former friends catch up on an eventful evening, old scars surface, but so do new hopes.

Together 99 has the immediacy of a fly-on-the-wall documentary and the humor of a sitcom. It is a sharp ensemble comedy about the disillusionment of middle age, a stage of life in which the ideological and sexual certainties of the past have fallen away. Where its predecessor looked at the shortcomings of living together through a post-Soviet lens, Together 99 looks at the post-internet atomization of society through the lens of contemporary cultural politics.
