Danny DeVito’s adaptation of Matilda is quirky and charming, and although the film diverges from Roald Dahl’s original story, it still captures the spirit of the book.
Matilda is a girl who displays extraordinary intelligence from a very young age. But her cruel parents and brother couldn’t care less about her, and they despise the fact that she is always buried in books. Eventually, they send her to a school that is run by a terrifying tyrant of a headmistress. Fortunately, Matilda has a kind teacher who is deeply impressed by her brilliance. When Matilda discovers she has telekinetic powers, she learns to control them and uses her abilities to teach both the headmistress and her parents a well-deserved lesson.
