Two lazy would-be gangsters become involved in a local politician's plan to drive all undesirable elements out of a neglected neighbourhood. At first, they support his attempt to take on the yakuza, but soon they are in danger of becoming victims of his quest to create a totalitarian mini-state.
Just before his breakthrough with Cure, Kurosawa Kiyoshi filmed this six-part yakuza comedy in just over a year, in which Yuji and Kosaku are the heroes. Despite their gangster appearance, they are sympathetic outsiders who stand up for the weak. The heroes come to the aid of a brother and sister who are having problems with the yakuza – but the brother has questionable intentions: he is trying to gain political power with the promise of “cleaning up” the neighbourhood. He becomes increasingly popular and his plans take on dystopian traits.
Kurosawa Kiyoshi, one of the modern masters of Japanese cinema, spent years making yakuza comedies for the video market. This is the last, the best and also the most Kurosawa-esque of these, as evidenced by a memorable six-minute scene shot in one take halfway through the film. What begins as a buddy comedy becomes increasingly mysterious and ends with an unforgettable climax.
The Japanese direct-to-video phenomenon V-Cinema emerged in the late 1980s and left a lasting mark on contemporary film culture. V-Cinema was created in response to the rise of video rental: filmmakers began making films that would not be released in cinemas. This approach allowed directors to work quickly, on a small budget and with a great deal of creative freedom.
With this Focus programme, IFFR is turning its attention to V-Cinema films, a combination of early works by established names and films that have rarely been shown outside Japan. In the Forum, you can see a selection of films from the Rotterdam programme.
There are no new dates planned (yet) for Suit Yourself or Shoot Yourself!! VI: The Hero.
