The Night Boots

While his parents host friends, a child leaves his home in the middle of the night and goes into the undergrowth with rubber boots on. There, a strange beast, curious and lonely, will take him to the heart of the forest to meet the night creatures that live there, and so as not to be alone again, it will try to delay the child's departure as long as possible. Directed by Pierre-Luc Granjon, France.

The jury: The Night Boots is a delicate and positive fable told through powerful, black-and-white visuals that is capable of speaking to both children and adults. The pinscreen technique is masterfully emploied to play with light and shadow, proving perfect for telling this story of friendship at the intersection between reality and fantasy.

Bike Film

A group of children decide to take a shortcut on their way home from school. Directed by: Haley Stemmons, USA

The jury: Bike Film is a playful and childlike animation style in combination with its dry humor. It felt like a realistic portrayal of childhood teenage friendships that reflect through the narrative, and the textured authentic feel of the animation. The film tapped into the early 2000s nostalgia with its video game music and characters, which add an extra layer of fun and emotional resonance.

Blau

A reflection on confronting loneliness, where nature and the aesthetic beauty and depth of a colour offer solace. Directed by Antonia Rehnen, Netherlands

The Jury: An impressive usage of different forms of media. The film felt very personal yet universal, taking you on a nostalgic and meditative journey that completely enamours. The intriguing soundscape contributes greatly to the dreamlike world the film takes place in.
