Cinematic Beauty
During the Cinematic Beauty film program we watch seven films, with an introduction, each of which sheds a different light on beauty. In collaboration with the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.
“Beauty alone makes the whole world happy, and each and every being forgets its limitations while under its spell,” the poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller once exclaimed. Cinema is particularly well-suited for delightful encounters with beauty: Since the beginning of film history, audiences experienced beauty in film’s many forms and genres.
Especially over the last 20 years, however, we have witnessed a growing number of filmmakers devoting attention to beauty for their artistic ends. What is the purpose of beauty in these films and how does it contribute to what a film wants to tell us? In collaboration with a team of film scholars from the University of Groningen, the Forum series Cinematic Beauty seeks answers to these questions through seven beautiful films, each shedding a different light on beauty.
Note: All films are suitable for English speakers. The introductions will be held in English.
