Cinematic Beauty

During the Cinematic Beauty film programme, we watch seven classics, with introductions, that each shed a different light on beauty. In collaboration with the University of Groningen.

“Beauty alone makes the whole world happy, and every being forgets its limitations as long as it is under its influence,” said poet and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. Film is particularly well-suited for various encounters with beauty: Since the beginning of film history, the public has experienced the beauty of the medium in many forms and genres.

During the Cinematic Beauty film program, we take you on a journey through seven beautiful classics from around the world, each of which sheds a different light on beauty. What is the purpose of beauty in these films, and how does it contribute to what a film wants to tell us? In collaboration with a team of film scholars from the University of Groningen, Cinematic Beauty seeks answers to these questions.
