Redemption is the ultimate goal in Paul Schrader's The Card Counter.
The revenge thriller tells the story of ex-serviceman William Tell (Oscar Isaac), who has struggled with his conscience since serving in Iraq. After serving time in prison, he reinvents himself as a professional gambler on the American poker circuit.
During a presentation by Major John Gordo (Willem Dafoe), William is approached by Cirk (Tye Sheridan), a troubled young man. William takes Cirk on a journey through various casinos to keep him on the right track. This seems to be an increasingly difficult task as William is also haunted by the past and the choices he made. His only solution seems to be to fight against his own past.
