Indie stalwart Alexandre Rockwell cast his own son, daughter and wife in this bittersweet coming-of-age drama about a dysfunctional family.
The result is a big adventure of little people and a heartfelt ode to youth. Billie (15) and her brother Nico (11) live an improvised idyllic family life with their loving father Adam. Every time Adam, who is a struggling alcoholic, gives in to his addiction, tears flow and feelings of guilt take the upper hand. Their eccentric mother took off years ago and is in a toxic relationship with Beaux, also an alcoholic albeit of the abusive kind.
When Adam gets sent to rehab to dry out, Billy and Nico take off with their new friend Malik, who is also an emotional orphan. Together they go in search of Malik's absentee father who is supposed to be living in Florida. The three embark on a wild romp, a truly magical experience that is testament to the hope and resilience of youth.
Sundance winner and indie icon Alexandre Rockwell created a heartfelt drama that goes against the grain, which won the Crystal Bear award for Best Film at the Berlin International Film Festival.
