Influential and terrifying J-horror that combines supernatural elements with fear of modern technology. Became a huge hit at home and abroad, resulting in various sequels and remakes.
Ringu was such a big hit in its own country that a prequel and sequel immediately followed this horror film about a doomed videotape. After the strange death of her niece, journalist Reiko investigates the mystery surrounding a tape that causes the death of anyone who watches it exactly one week later. Her ex also interferes and in the meantime their son must be kept out of danger.
The film also did well abroad: two American remakes were made with Naomi Watts in the lead role. It took a lot of detective work to find the Japanese rights holder of the film, who gave permission for an exclusive screening in the Forum.
