In this vibrant homage to Hollywood's technicolor era, filmmaker Ti West tops his 2022 slasher X. Texas, 1918. On the brink of madness, young Pearl (Mia Goth) pursues stardom in a desperate attempt to escape the grind, the isolation and the lovelessness of life on her parents' farm.

Although it is a prequel, "origin story" Pearl can be viewed independently of sequel X. Mia Goth steals the show and offers a disturbing insight into the mind of a serial killer, in a way that is reminiscent of films such as Joker and American Psycho. Pearl will not be released in the Netherlands (hence no subtitles), but we got the chance to screen it exclusively for a few weeks before it is dropped on the streaming services.
