Feature film debut by Michael Mann, with a masterful James Caan as thief Frank, an uneducated safecracker with a restaurant and car company as a cover.
He arranges one last major robbery so he can start a family, but unexpectedly has to deal with the local mafia boss. Director Mann chose dark, cold and wet Chicago with a suitably menacing soundtrack by electronics ensemble Tangerine Dream. For Caan, it was a continuation of his acclaimed role as the violent Sonny Corleone from The Godfather. It rightly became a classic in the crime genre, with Caan at the top of his game.
